Alcohols have higher boiling points than other classes of compounds, namely hydrocarbons, ethers and haloalkanes of comparable molecular masses. Alcohols and phenols are acidic in nature. Electron withdrawing groups in phenol increase its acidic strength and electron releasing groups decrease it.
