If the initial velocities and final velocities of both the bodies are along the same straight line, then it is called a one-dimensional collision, or head-on collision. Two objects, A and B, collide on a frictionless surface. Object A has a mass of 2 kg and is moving to the right at a speed of 6 m/s. Object B has a mass of 3 kg and is moving to the left at a speed of 4 m/s.

Two bodies having same mass 40 kg are moving in opposite directions, one with a velocity of 10 m/s and the other with 7 m/s If they collide and move as one body, then find velocity of the combination.

(a) Show that in case of one dimensional elastic collision of two bodies, the relative velocity of separation after the collision is equal to the relative velocity of approach before collision. (b) Hence write expressions for the velocities of two bodies in terms of their initial velocities before collision.
